It’s The End Of BLOB As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)

The end of BLOB is upon us! On Monday we’ll be able to do whatever we want. I’m going to celebrate the end of BLOB with some purchases on Amazon (with gift cards) and at a semi-local Indie – Daniel and I are making a special trip down on Tuesday. After that, though, I think I’m going to have to be even stricter with review copies than I was this month, we are hoping to be out of our place by mid-March. Yes, we’ll still have to go back to get mail, but I don’t really want a bunch of books clogging up our tiny mailbox. I could have books sent to the office, but we are supposed to move buildings sometime around August, so I don’t really want people to get used to sending to this address either. What are your post-BLOB plans? Are you continuing on? Doing BLOB-light? Binging? Some mix of all of the above?

I didn’t feel the effects as much as I wanted because I bought and requested at the end of Jan. I definitely will be requesting less and buying less — but I have two print bks waiting at the library for Monday and a couple of digital audios waiting.

One thing I hope to do is wait 24 hours before requesting from SA or saying yes to pitches — I make much better decisions when I do that.

I have noticed fewer books coming in for the last 2 wks, which should spill over into March.

I have to update the spread sheet, which I”ll do on Sunday (purged books and a contest entered but not won)

Oh, that’s right, the library! I think I already have at least 4 books waiting for me, but I think I’m going to try to work towards taking out only 1 or 2 books at a time, not counting audios. I had all these books that I kept renewing this month and don’t think I read a single one for the entirety of February. No, that’s not right, I read exactly one, but only because it was for That’s How I Blog. I need to make sure I don’t lose any while we’re moving, and that means having fewer to need to keep track of.

I think BLOB was a great idea! I’m definitely feeling better now but not as much as I want to be. There’s a ton of unread books still on my shelves and I really want to read them before I buy any more books. I think I’ll definitely go BLOB-light.

BLOB is wrapping up on Sunday and I m going in for my final cuts. Is there more to purged? It’s hard to imagine that there is. I had made a considerable amount sf space on my shelves but lots of pre-BLOB acquisitions are showing up to fill them in!

Will also be going through my hole inbox to see what damage can be done on that front. Surely it is too late to get a lot of the books that I was offered earlier this month- but I might be tempted to see in a few cases. February is a short month!

I think you’ve culled as deeply as you can, personally, but you shouldn’t deny yourself some of those pitches!

      • Nicole 1:32 am on February 24, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I must admit that I probably have. I keep looking but I am pretty much committed to everything I now have on my shelves. You are so sweet to be thinking of me! Depending on how I do with the pitches I might be buying you lunch. :(

How much more do you have that you haven’t listed yet?

      • Nicole 12:47 pm on February 25, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I don’t even know anymore. I think I may have had another 30 to add, but I stopped keeping count. That will be my project from now until Sunday.

I just took a book from a swap site, Nine Lives, which Nicole has repeatedly recommended to me. In my defense, I was planning on ordering it from Amazon on March 1st. Of course, that isn’t much of a defense, because now I’ll just pick something else to buy, because I haz gift cards.

I’m also planning to go down to an Indie bookstore I now love the first day in March I’m off work and buy at least one book. They may also let me go through their ARC shelf…

Oh I soooo wish I had an indie store and one with an ARC shelf and one that would have events and invite me. Sigh……

      • jendevourerofbooks 9:16 pm on February 22, 2010 Permalink | Reply

They’re a decent trek, but not as far as you would have to go to find one. I was very pleasantly surprised when I went last time and they invited me back to the ARC shelf, when I planned my next visit with them, they said, “oh, we’ll have to take you back there again!” Not that I’ve read a single ARC I got from them in the last month – or any of the library books I keep renewing. It has been all review copies, all the time.

An indie store with good books AND Amazon gift cards? I’m a teeny tiny bit jealous ;-)
I envy you all for doing BLOB (and secretly wished I had joined in)…

I’ve got 3 books already waiting for me at the library on March 1st!

  • Vasilly 5:36 am on February 22, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I’m trading books with a fellow blogger. I’m spending her three and she’s sending me two. Do I count one as a give-away copy? Do I add points to my score or take any off? I was thinking since I stay with almost the same amount of books to just add the -2 pts for the last book while counting the first two as gifts. Any thoughts?

    • bethfishreads 10:45 am on February 22, 2010 Permalink | Reply

      you have -6 for giveaways

and I think the ones you are getting count as either requests or library — not gifts because you aren’t getting them by surprise or out of the blue with no input from you.

      Anyone else?

    • jendevourerofbooks 6:01 pm on February 22, 2010 Permalink | Reply

We have swap sites listed as 5 points, I would think trading with a fellow blogger would count in that, wouldn’t it? Like an informal swap site? I know I’ve been avoiding an informal blogger-only swap site because I assumed any books there would cost me 5 points. You can definitely count the 3 you’re giving away as -6, but I’d be inclined to think you’d have to take 5 points for each of those and end up with 4 points at the end of the transaction. At the very least you’d take 3 points for each and end up even.

Blob is costing Dawn pairs of shoes but I’m realizing it’s costing me magazines. Since the beginning of BLOB, I’ve been buying magazines left and right. Oprah, Art Journaling, Poughshares, and more. The bad thing about it is that I DON’T read magazines! I might glance through them now and then, but I don’t usually buy them because I won’t read a whole magazine.

Today I went into Borders to buy a journal and came out with two journals and four magazine, blowing my budget. Thankfully I didn’t come out with any books though. The next time I see a magazine in a store, I’m going to run away! ;)

    • bethfishreads 1:39 am on February 20, 2010 Permalink | Reply

LOL!! That’s one way to avoid buying books but still get new reading material.

      • Vasilly 3:43 pm on February 20, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I know! I’m determined to spend this weekend reading everything I bought. We’ll see how far I get. Why is it that I’ve been online for just 3 minutes and enter and won a contest in that time? 6 more points to add to my score.

    • Nicole 8:52 pm on February 20, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Thankfully I haven’t found anything to fill the void. I seem to be on a purging kick. I’m giving away clothes too.

    • Vasilly 10:06 pm on February 20, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Lucky! I’ve been purging clothes too! Right now my living room and kitchen both look a mess since I’m getting rid of silverware, dishes, and pots. If this keeps up by the end of BLOB all I will have are jeans, books, and magazines!

Okay, so I entered a contest on an author’s blog for a galley of her new book back in January and didn’t win. Today she dm’d me on Twitter and told me that she has an extra copy, and to send her my address and she’ll send it out. Is that pre-BLOB acquisition, or a pitched review copy? I think it stems from me entering the contest, but wanted to get opinions

    • bethfishreads 6:53 pm on February 19, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Seems like a new pitch to me …. Other opinions?

      • jendevourerofbooks 6:58 pm on February 19, 2010 Permalink | Reply

That’s what I would have considered it, but she didn’t actually ask if I *wanted* it, she just said, “send me your address and I’ll send it!” I’m good with whatever you all decide, though.

    • Vasilly 7:01 pm on February 19, 2010 Permalink | Reply

It sounds like a new pitch to me too though you did sign up for it in January.

      • Nicole 8:51 pm on February 20, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I think that since you didn’t win the contest that transaction is concluded and now she is sending you an unsolicited copy. Well sort of solicited since you have to send your adress. but I would think whatever gets you the least amount of points. Would that be 3?

        • jendevourerofbooks 6:01 pm on February 22, 2010 Permalink

Yes, 3, as a pitched review copy, that’s what I went ahead and counted it as.

I finally broke down and entered two contests. One for Mockingbird and the other for that darn Louisa May Alcott book. I just couldn’t resist and I will gladly take the other 5 points if I get it. In other news I think that I am going to accept a couple of ARCs. I want Willow. Someone tell me that it wasn’t good!

    • bethfishreads 3:02 pm on February 18, 2010 Permalink | Reply

WILLOW is one of my top 2009 reads and the book I have pushed more than others. Plus I *love* the author! Willow is worth all the points.

      • Nicole 3:06 pm on February 18, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Thanks! That one was pretty much a done deal and it was pitched so it won’t be so bad.

Ah, yah, I accepted that Louisa May Alcott book from Trish for a tour. I also accepted one other book yesterday, and may be accepting one more today.

Did you read The Secret Diaries of Charlotte Bronte? That was so good. I’m hoping that this will be the same- serious faux real treatment.

You have fewer books now than you did at the beginning of the month, so you are improving, even if incrementally.

Even with no mail delivery yesterday I ended up getting 6 books! 4 came from FedEx in one package, then UPS brought me 4 separate packages, with one book each. Sorry, though, Nicole, they are all pre-BLOB acquisitions!

Trying to get Stealing Buddha’s Dinner for the THIRD time via PBS. Last two came from smoking homes. Why do I want this book so much? It got mixed reviews!

Yeah I’ve heard that but I want to read it because I LOVED her debut novel, Short Girls. Also read there is a section on Laura Ingalls Wilder and apparently she’s working on a novel about her now. :)

What? a second on LIW? Argh. But from Jen’s assessment, this looks like a library book rather than a purchase.
