It’s The End Of BLOB As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)

The end of BLOB is upon us! On Monday we’ll be able to do whatever we want. I’m going to celebrate the end of BLOB with some purchases on Amazon (with gift cards) and at a semi-local Indie – Daniel and I are making a special trip down on Tuesday. After that, though, I think I’m going to have to be even stricter with review copies than I was this month, we are hoping to be out of our place by mid-March. Yes, we’ll still have to go back to get mail, but I don’t really want a bunch of books clogging up our tiny mailbox. I could have books sent to the office, but we are supposed to move buildings sometime around August, so I don’t really want people to get used to sending to this address either. What are your post-BLOB plans? Are you continuing on? Doing BLOB-light? Binging? Some mix of all of the above?

I didn’t feel the effects as much as I wanted because I bought and requested at the end of Jan. I definitely will be requesting less and buying less — but I have two print bks waiting at the library for Monday and a couple of digital audios waiting.

One thing I hope to do is wait 24 hours before requesting from SA or saying yes to pitches — I make much better decisions when I do that.

I have noticed fewer books coming in for the last 2 wks, which should spill over into March.

I have to update the spread sheet, which I”ll do on Sunday (purged books and a contest entered but not won)

Oh, that’s right, the library! I think I already have at least 4 books waiting for me, but I think I’m going to try to work towards taking out only 1 or 2 books at a time, not counting audios. I had all these books that I kept renewing this month and don’t think I read a single one for the entirety of February. No, that’s not right, I read exactly one, but only because it was for That’s How I Blog. I need to make sure I don’t lose any while we’re moving, and that means having fewer to need to keep track of.

I think BLOB was a great idea! I’m definitely feeling better now but not as much as I want to be. There’s a ton of unread books still on my shelves and I really want to read them before I buy any more books. I think I’ll definitely go BLOB-light.

I just took a book from a swap site, Nine Lives, which Nicole has repeatedly recommended to me. In my defense, I was planning on ordering it from Amazon on March 1st. Of course, that isn’t much of a defense, because now I’ll just pick something else to buy, because I haz gift cards.

I’m also planning to go down to an Indie bookstore I now love the first day in March I’m off work and buy at least one book. They may also let me go through their ARC shelf…

Oh I soooo wish I had an indie store and one with an ARC shelf and one that would have events and invite me. Sigh……

They’re a decent trek, but not as far as you would have to go to find one. I was very pleasantly surprised when I went last time and they invited me back to the ARC shelf, when I planned my next visit with them, they said, “oh, we’ll have to take you back there again!” Not that I’ve read a single ARC I got from them in the last month – or any of the library books I keep renewing. It has been all review copies, all the time.

An indie store with good books AND Amazon gift cards? I’m a teeny tiny bit jealous ;-)
I envy you all for doing BLOB (and secretly wished I had joined in)…

I’ve got 3 books already waiting for me at the library on March 1st!

Okay, so I entered a contest on an author’s blog for a galley of her new book back in January and didn’t win. Today she dm’d me on Twitter and told me that she has an extra copy, and to send her my address and she’ll send it out. Is that pre-BLOB acquisition, or a pitched review copy? I think it stems from me entering the contest, but wanted to get opinions

Seems like a new pitch to me …. Other opinions?

      • jendevourerofbooks 6:58 pm on February 19, 2010 Permalink | Reply

That’s what I would have considered it, but she didn’t actually ask if I *wanted* it, she just said, “send me your address and I’ll send it!” I’m good with whatever you all decide, though.

It sounds like a new pitch to me too though you did sign up for it in January.

      • Nicole 8:51 pm on February 20, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I think that since you didn’t win the contest that transaction is concluded and now she is sending you an unsolicited copy. Well sort of solicited since you have to send your adress. but I would think whatever gets you the least amount of points. Would that be 3?

        • jendevourerofbooks 6:01 pm on February 22, 2010 Permalink

Yes, 3, as a pitched review copy, that’s what I went ahead and counted it as.

Even with no mail delivery yesterday I ended up getting 6 books! 4 came from FedEx in one package, then UPS brought me 4 separate packages, with one book each. Sorry, though, Nicole, they are all pre-BLOB acquisitions!

    See our scores!

The lovely Heidenkind mentioned that she’d love to be able to see who is winning the game, so I figured out how to create a graph from the Google document we’re using as a score sheet and have it post to WordPress. It will automatically update as people get rid of more books, accept pitches, buy books, etc. You will not see the specifics of what someone did, but you can see who is currently in the lead, and by approximately how much. Just click ‘scoresheet’ here or on the sidebar under ‘Pages.’

Also, it looks like we may ALL end in the negative. Are you all still planning on donating any $ to your charities, or do you figure you’re donating books to them? I know I’ve given books to Goodwill, the library, and a warming center run by a friend’s church (okay, those are going out on Friday)

    • Vasilly 5:40 pm on February 10, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Yesterday since I had the huge urge to buy books, I donated money already to 826. I’m still giving my books away to my local library though.

    • bethfishreads 5:40 pm on February 10, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I’m going to count my donated books as charity — because I’m giving them to the AAUW. They sell the books and use the money to fund college scholarships for women.

I might still donate money. I need to do a huge purge. but I’m unemployed now so less likely to, LOL

        • jendevourerofbooks 12:55 am on February 13, 2010 Permalink

You’re now less likely to purge, or less likely to donate? I think you’d be more likely to purge, in case you move.

less likely to donate money LOL

        • jendevourerofbooks 3:12 pm on February 13, 2010 Permalink

Okay, that’s what I thought, I wasn’t quite sure from the way you phrased it.

Nicole got me totally pumped up last night on THIB when she said 200 books, now I’m determined to have another ruthless night/day tonight and tomorrow. Plus I need to log the 40+ other books I’ve already marked for dismissal. I’m going to have to shelve some books to take their place so I can see what else should go!

Oh, and hearing about the 200 books that Nicole is planning to get rid of has helped me determine NOT to take the books I was pitched yesterday. Onward to victory!

Just go in to see if they have anything you absolutely can’t live without. How many times do $2 come along??? You can hold back from buying a bunch of books, right? ;)

      • jendevourerofbooks 5:45 pm on February 10, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Yah, two of the books I was pitched yesterday look good, but can I live without them? Yes. There is one book I’m REALLY tempted to buy or get from the library, but I suppose I can live without it until March 1!

Okay, so far I’ve taken one review copy and entered to win one book via Shelf Awareness (it was an Amy Einhorn book! What else could I do???). However, 74 books have officially left my house, and I have another 40-50 in piles ready to go!
